Luise-Charlotte Kappe, Robert Morse, and Arturo Magidin are planning to submit a proposal to the American Mathematical Society for the publication of a Conference Proceedings volume within the Contemporary Mathematics series. These Proceedings are intended to cover both the Harlaxton Conference on Computational Group Theory and Cohomology, and the Special Session on Computational Group Theory that will take place in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in mid-October 2008.
Contributions to the volume will be peer-reviewed; they can be research articles, surveys, or exposition pieces. In fact, the AMS prefers if there are at least a couple of expository or survey articles in the proposal.
Here is how the process works: once the Kalamazoo session is over, we will send a proposal to the AMS in October. Usually within a month, the AMS Editorial Board will either give the proposal a preliminary approval, or reject it. If we receive preliminary approval, this will be the signal to begin accepting submissions.
The usual target publication date is no more than one year after the conference takes place, in this case October 2009. Initial submissions would be due in February or March of 2009. Once all the referee reports are in, and the editors make preliminary acceptance or rejection decisions, all reports (those for accepted and also those for rejected submissions) are sent to the AMS Editorial Board. A final decision on publication is made on the basis of these reports. If the Board approves publication, then final submissions are made and publication follows within a few months.
If you have already indicated your desire to contribute, thank you; you need do nothing more at this point, and we will be in contact with you for the next step. If you have not indicated your interest but would like to be kept informed, please e-mail Arturo Magidin (magidin at member.ams.org) and let him know. We are interested in both research and expository/survey pieces (or both!). Thank you.
